Incised lacquer decorated in a style known as Yun is a characteristic of Burma and surrounding area. The technique originated during the Warring States period in China and was embraced by the Burmese kingdoms through subsequent trade and tribute.

Modern times accepts a mass produced plastic bowl or box as an acceptable container for their foods. Burmese receptacles, sometimes signed by the artisans, are meant to be used, passed down and appreciated as art forms.
