DESCRIPTION |
Tibetan chest of lacquered wood. Joinery fixed by ferrous metal corner plates. Painted decoration in the front of five toed dragon chasing a pearl within a cusped sphere. Cloud motif surrounds the dragon. There are faded spots that were once gold leaf. This chest is at least from the 17th century and could date earlier. The metal is original except the front latch. The style mimics leather boxes that were prevalent around 1400 and 1500. |
