DESCRIPTION

This vase is based on the shape of a bronze "GU" vase from the Shang or possibly Zhou dynasty several thousand years ago. These bronze vases was taken as models for porcelain vases before and during the Kangxi period (1662-1722)

This is a copy of these later porcelain vases. It was the Empress dowager who ruled China by the end of the 19th century whose great fascination for the early Qing dynasty and maybe their foremost emperor Kangxi, that instigated a new fashion for Kangxi porcelain copying. Now they did not copy the porcelain really exact but rather used the style, color scheme and - mark - to show what they were after. This style lived well into the 20th century.

Six-character Kangxi apocryphal mark
