Shirvan, East Caucasian Verneh
wool on wool foundation.
200 x 140 cm.
1920s antique.
Typical of Shirvan district weaving. Motifs are always stylised and based on flora or fauna forms. These textiles defined by the weave are classified as "verneh", other terms referring to flat woven textiles formed by weave variations are classified as "Kelims" or "Zile".
They are used as floor coverings, covers, wall hangings and eating mats, and are therefore very versatile decorative textiles.
